Labour has officially won the 2024 general election after reaching the required 326 seats. Speaking in central London, the next prime minister, Keir Starmer, said: "This is a historic victory for Labour and for the people of this country. We have a mandate to change this country for the better and we will not let you down."
Labour will win 410 seats according to the major exit poll, with the Conservatives on 230 and the Liberal Democrats on 14. The SNP is predicted to win 55 seats, Plaid Cymru 4, and the Green Party 1. The exit poll also predicts that the Brexit Party will win no seats.
The results of the election will come as a huge disappointment to the Conservatives, who were hoping to win a fourth term in government. Boris Johnson resigned as Prime Minister in May after a series of scandals, and his successor, Liz Truss, has failed to turn the party's fortunes around.
The election results will also be seen as a major victory for Keir Starmer, who has led Labour since 2020. Starmer has promised to "build a fairer, greener, more prosperous society" and has pledged to invest in public services, tackle the cost of living crisis, and unite the country.
